A major European motorway also goes through Kastrup, making car hire in Kastrup convenient for travel in Denmark.

What to do and see in Kastrup

As a suburb of Copenhagen, Kastrup allows access to the city's wide cultural calendar. Events include the city's famed musical festivals, like Distortion, Strøm and Copenhagen Jazz Festival, as well as the indie-oriented Summer in the City Festival. You can also get a taste of the city's rich brewing heritage with the Copenhagen Beer Festival in May.

Kastrup's sports scene is tied to Copenhagen, with convenient travel to Parken Stadium, home of FC Copenhagen and the Danish national football team. Kastrup's local team, Kastrup Boldklub, plays in the Denmark Series, with its football grounds at Kastrup Idrætsanlæg. Kastrup is also close to the Royal Arena, which hosts numerous sporting events and music acts. There are two golf courses in the area – Royal Golf Club and Dragør Golfklub.

The main cultural museum is Kastrupgård, a rococo-style manor house that contains the Kastrupgård Collection. Here, visitors can see the works of Theodor Philipsen and sculptures by Rva Sørensen. A number of other important cultural attractions line the eastern coast, including the child-favourite National Aquarium Denmark and Amager Beach. You can also discover the 19th-century Kastrup Fort in Femøren.

While Kastrup's food scene is limited to the Kastruplundgade and Amager Landevej areas, visitors have access to Copenhagen's spectacular culinary centre. Copenhagen has quickly become a hotspot for cutting-edge dining with 15 Michelin-awarded restaurants. The city's creative and modern Scandi cuisine spans heavyweights like Noma, Alouette and Jatak. Haute cuisine aside, open sandwiches (smørrebrød), Danish hotdogs (pølser) and pastries (wienerbrød) provide affordable and delicious must-try foods.

Thanks to the modern Field's shopping mall, Kastrup offers excellent shopping opportunities. Home to a wealth of Danish and international brands spanning fashion, home and electronics, Field's is one of Copenhagen's largest shopping centres. Copenhagen's centre offers a further variety of shopping options, including the luxury department store ILLUM and stellar designers like Stilleben and Stine Goya. For edible treats, head to Bornholmer Butikken in Torvehallerne Market.

Kastrup is ideally located for cross-channel travel to Malmö by road and for quick travel into western Denmark by road. It's just 20 km to ARKEN in Ishøj, one of the country's best contemporary art spaces. Further west, Roskilde is a popular day trip destination from Kastrup, offering captivating Viking attractions in its historic centre. More locally, coastal walking trails like Kalvebod Fælled provide local excursions for nature lovers. With a car or van hire in Kastrup, you can better explore the wider Copenhagen area and attractions in its vicinity.

Driving in Kastrup

Kastrup is a well-connected suburb of Copenhagen with excellent road links. This is partly due to Kastrup hosting Copenhagen's airport and links to Sweden via the Øresund Bridge. Travel in and around the city is also made convenient by a network of highways and ring roads.

Kastrup is served by the E20 motorway, also known as the Øresund motorway, a designated European road that connects Ireland and the United Kingdom (by sea ferry) to Denmark. The E20 then continues east through Sweden, Estonia and Russia. The section of the E20 that heads west into Zealand is called the Amager motorway.

There are several road links into Copenhagen from Kastrup, as well as connections to the European route E47 to avoid the city centre. The Ring 2 ring road also allows for convenient travel to sites like the Experimentarium without traversing Copenhagen's centre.

In Denmark, cars drive on the right side of the road and overtake on the left. While Kastrup is fairly quiet, the Amager motorway is one of the most congested, so expect busier conditions when driving in and out of Copenhagen. Rush hour in Copenhagen generally takes place between 07:00 to 09:00 and 15:30 to 17:30 on weekdays. No motorways in Kastrup or Denmark are tolled, but some bridges are.

Parking is available at most major business addresses throughout Kastrup, particularly at tourist sites and natural parks. However, Copenhagen can be notoriously difficult during peak times with strict central rules and narrow roads. Pay attention to pay zones which operate within the city at designated times. As for driving limits, built-up areas have speeds of 50 km/h. Motorways can reach speeds of 110 to 130 km/h where signposted. Abide by all limits, including restrictions of 40 km/h in Copenhagen, as speed cameras are in operation.

The centre of Copenhagen and Kastrup's residential regions have low-speed zones, particularly around schools. Abide by these at all times. There are also dedicated cycle and pedestrian zones where cars do not have the right of way. Ensure that you follow all stop and no-access signs.
